LVD is named after its founding fathers, Jacques Lefebvre, Marc Vanneste and Robert Dewulf. Established in the 1950s, LVD is a leading manufacturer of sheet metalworking equipment, including laser cutting systems, punch presses, press brakes, guillotine shears and automation systems, integrated to and supported by its CADMAN® software suite. Load-Assist (LA) is one of their automation systems that can be added to a laser cutting system in order to increase productivity. The Load-Assist automatically loads material and, during unmanned production, unloads cut sheets to an unloading station or a conveyor. This solution offers a highly reliable, cost-effective automated process without operator intervention. Solid software is required for this automated handling.

How it started

LVD invested a lot in the development of a new automation range and new system developments using Solid software.

The added value of Digital Twins was clear to LVD. In the past LVD used simulation to test the developed software before a real prototype was available, but the simulations were time consuming as they needed to start over for every projects and the graphics were not satisfactory.

Using simulation and digital twins requires both technical expertise and resources. The need of LVD was to have a solution where the graphics were better, with an improved perfomance and a more accurate simulation of reality.

That’s how Vintecc came into the picture. With more than 10 years of practical experience in digital twins, they are a suitable partner for LVD.

Simulation as a service

Every project, every customer, every software has its unique properties, which means that Vintecc always ran into limitations of off the shelf products. The choice to build our own flexible and customizable platform to run simulations was crucial in Vintecc’s vision for the future.

VINTECC - Process simulation

It offers the flexibility and possibility to offer simulations as a service or to build a customer specific simulation platform making it possible engineers can get started themselves.

In the case of LVD the choice has been made to use the simulation services of Vintecc, the ease of use was key.

The project

LVD wanted to test the Load-Assist automation software at a stage where some of the hardware was still missing. In addition, they wanted to continue programming and testing the entire flow of operation.
The software development process was ongoing when LVD decided to cooperate with Vintecc, whose simulation software offered the ideal solution.

Important requirements for this project:

  • Testing the software
  • Simulating the system flow
  • Picking different plate thicknesses
  • Full integration into the development environment
  • Built the executable according to a specific pattern to have it reusable for various projects

LVD provided a 3D file of the machine and the necessary input to run the simulations.

From Physical to Digital

The outcome

Vintecc provided a standalone executable with a custom interface with their external application allowing LVD to finalize, validate and optimize their software well before a first prototype was built.

Another big asset is the ability to validate new software versions before distributing them to customers. Simulation can be used in every phase of the lifecycle of a machine.

In addition to the enormous time savings, they have also been able to save the investment in training, resources and the purchase of an expensive simulation platform with possible limitations.

The load assist project was very successful! As a result, 2 additional projects were recently started.
