new multi purpose pontoon all set to install the gravel bed for the Fehmarnbelt Tunnel

A highly specialized pontoon, designed specifically for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel project, has been delivered to the Femern Link Contractors (FLC) joint venture. The multi-purpose pontoon will install the gravel bed on which the 89 concrete elements of the tunnel will rest as they are immersed to the seabed.

The new pontoon measures 130 meters in length, 45 meters in width, and has a gross tonnage of 17,577. It is equipped with two large tanks, each capable of holding up to 7,000 tons of gravel. With its exceptional precision, even at significant depths, the pontoon can expertly install layers of gravel, ensuring a uniform foundation.

Currently two floating pontoons are under construction at the CRIST shipyard to transport the 89 tunnel elements from the floating dock in Rødbyhavn to their final destination.

Stabilizing the underwater frame - using cables and winches on the vessel - is done by AI-algorithmes developed by vintecc. For this vintecc used dual, the in-house developed simulation platform, to simulate the dynamics on the unique vessel and to strongly speed up the development of the AI-algorithm.

The Fehmarnbelt tunnel is a 18-kilometer immersed tunnel between Germany and Denmark. It will be the longest immersed tunnel in the world and the longest tunnel for both road and rail traffic. The tunnel is scheduled to open in 2029.
