throughput analysis to define the correct layout of a new warehouse

relevance

Warehouse dimensioning is a crucial step in the design of any warehouse operation. It involves determining the optimal size and layout of the warehouse to meet the needs of the business.

Throughput analysis is a key tool used in warehouse dimensioning to ensure that the warehouse is designed to handle the required volume of goods and detect bottlenecks. Especially if you need a large warehouse like Agristo.

challenge

Once the warehouse was designed vintecc was asked to create a digital model of the warehouse and test different throughput scenarios before the warehouse was built.

Using virtual simulation we were able to identify and mitigate potential bottlenecks, optimize the layout of the warehouse, and ensure that the warehouse is the right size to meet the needs of the client.

the added value of virtual simulation for warehouse dimensioning

1 testing different warehouse layouts
  • Virtual simulation can be used to test different warehouse layouts to see which one is the most efficient and cost-effective.
  • This can be especially helpful for complex warehouses with multiple picking and packing areas.
2 identifying and mitigating bottlenecks
  • Virtual simulation can be used to identify potential bottlenecks in the warehouse operation.
  • This can help designers to make changes to the layout or processes to eliminate or reduce bottlenecks.
  • Quickly see efficiency overview or take an in depth dive in the result data.
  • Run using real life data or test the layout using a worst case scenario.
3 analyzing throughput
  • Virtual simulation can be used to analyze the throughput of the warehouse under different conditions.
  • This can help designers to ensure that the warehouse is designed to handle the required volume of goods.
4 evaluating new technologies
  • Virtual simulation can be used to evaluate the impact of new technologies on the warehouse operation.
  • For example, designers can use virtual simulation to test the impact of a new automated order picking system on the overall throughput of the warehouse.
